Nukara is beautiful place, and we thank you for letting us have the opportunity to spend a few days there. The whole style of Nukara is unique, and we're very glad we could come. Your food was, to our eyes, the best in the land, especially the slices and scones, which you made for us even though you didn't have to, which made them all the more special.

Thanks to Phil for teaching us how to make damper, many of us have never had it, and it's amazing how delicious flour and milk can be with the right teacher! Donna, thanks for letting us feed and collect eggs from the chooks, which for some was a new, exciting, fun, or even frightening experience!

Nukara – The Eco-friendly Experience

In 2010 Nukara was awarded the Environmental Efficiency Award at the Mid West Chamber of Commerce Small Business Awards. Here’s why.

  • All the venue facilities are operating without mains electricity and water and are totally independent.
  • The farm is registered with Land for Wildlife and large areas have been revegetated, fenced off or destocked all together.
  • Majority of all infrastructure has been built out of recycled materials
  • The majority of equipment used to fit out the venues is from recycled materials, examples of these are:
  -    Stainless steel sinks and benches for the kitchen
  -    Commercial ovens
  -    Refrigeration
  -    Basins for the ablution block
  -    All doors
  -    All windows
  -    Sea container for storage of equipment
  -    Lister generator
  -    Jarrah flooring
  -    Roofing

  • All the venues power requirements are met by solar and wind energy with generator back up.
  • 20L canvas shower buckets are used in the ablution facilities to reduce water consumption.
  • An extensive organic vegetable garden and orchard supply produce for the kitchen.
  • All kitchen scraps are fed to the free range chickens.
  • The free range chicken manure is used to fertilise the orchard and vegetable garden along with sheep and cow manure that is collected off the farm.
  • Shredded paper from the office is used for the worm farm and mulching.
  • All cans from events are recycled locally.
  • Prunings from the agro-forestry site are used to fuel winter fires for heating and cooking.
  • All camp sites are unpowered to reduce electricity demands and promote alternative practices to fossil fuels.
  • In 2008 we planted 25,000 native trees as part of a carbon neutral program with the Men of Trees Organisation.
  • We are a Wwoofer (Willing Workers on Organic Farms) host family where we accommodate backpackers from all over the world who in exchange for food, bed and experience of living with an Australian Family work for approximately 6 hours a day. This work involves maintaining the orchard, vegetable garden, grounds, animal husbandry and helping with ongoing building projects.
  • Nukara runs educational school camps informing children of the importance and benefits of caring for our environment and the significance of maintaining healthy eco-systems. This is evident by the diversity of bird life at Nukara and frog populations that reside in the creeks and dams on the property, not to mention the amazing flora.
  • Bush walks and tours are very popular with children and adults alike where they get the opportunity to interact with local wildlife and view the abundant variety of native flora as well as experience the pleasure nature provides.
  • 100% recycled paper and envelopes are used for the office.
  • Empty ink cartridges from the printer are recycled.
  • All cleaning products are environmentally friendly.
  • Toilet paper is 100% recycled.
  • Biodegradable plates, knives, forks and cups are used at some functions otherwise plates are washed.
  • Only water wise plants are used to minimise water requirements.
  • All sprinklers used at lawn areas at venues are operated by gravity fed pressure.
  • Up to 70,000 litres of rainwater is collected from annual rainfall for the kitchen and ablutions.
  • Wind breaks of native trees have been used in exposed areas for protection of the guests from the wind.
  • No air conditioners, room heating, microwaves, electric toasters and electric kettles are used in the venues as these draw large amounts of power. Instead everything has been designed to operate and be comfortable without dependence on burning large amounts of fossil fuels.
